Most people enjoy the variety and challenge of making prototypes and other one-of-a-kind items. While I understand and appreciate this appeal, I really enjoy production work. The challenge for me involves the development of efficient programs and effective multi-part fixturing. I enjoy tracking process parameters and plotting control charts. I gain a great deal of satisfaction when significant savings are realized from small improvements that are multiplied by thousands of parts. I’m a perfectionist. I just can’t leave anything alone. I’m always looking for better, more efficient ways to deliver accurate parts on time at a lower cost. It is especially rewarding when a process is so well designed and characterized that it can be performed by low cost labor (machine operators) without any sacrifice in yield, quality, speed, and accuracy.
